Vision Rehabilitation in Northampton MA

6-7-13 089The goal of vision rehabilitation is to restore visual functioning when it has been compromised by a brain injury or neurological disorder. Some injuries/disorders associated with a loss of visual functioning include: stroke, traumatic brain injury, birth injury, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy.

6-7-13 130With an estimated three-quarters of the brain involved in the receiving and processing of visual information, visual problems resulting from a brain injury or neurological disorder are very common. Yet, these problems are frequently overlooked during the physical rehabilitation process. For these individuals, vision rehabilitation is often the missing link in their treatment plan.

Without vision rehabilitation, these individuals are unable to achieve maximum results from their rehab services, creating feelings of frustration among themselves and their families.  Some common symptoms of visual problems include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Reading and comprehension difficulty
  • Attention, concentration and memory difficulty
  • Double Vision
  • Headaches with visual tasks
  • Aching eyes
  • Eye tracking and focusing difficulty
  • Poor balance
  • Visual/spatial disorientation

At Northampton Vision Specialists, we provide patients with a comprehensive vision exam to determine whether vision rehabilitation will be an effective means of addressing vision problems that have resulted from a trauma to the nervous system, stroke or neurological disorder. With the goal of enhancing the patient’s visual capabilities, treatment may include the prescribing of lenses or prisms, along with optometric vision therapy and optometric phototherapy.  Our therapy takes a multi-sensory approach by incorporating visual, auditory, proprioceptive and vestibular input in order to guide our patients towards integrating these systems efficiently and accurately. Our goal is to help our patients regain their former selves as much as possible.

The stroke happened on a Saturday afternoon…no precipitating cause was ever found. I completely credit Dr. Ruggiero and her staff for giving me my life back. I have been able to return to all my previous activities and hobbies, as well as attain a Master’s degree.
